The origin and history of Korean sweets |
|
|
The first Korean sweet made is assumed to have been a type of starch
syrup candy
(what can be confirmed from documents is from Goryeo Dynasty).
Through the Shilla and Goryeo Dynasties, agriculture developed increasing
the production of grains. And the spread of Buddhism led people to shy
away from meat and to produce Korean sweets as indispensable food
for rituals and weddings.
In particular, after the period of the Three Kingdoms, sweets rapidly
developed
and were consumed with tea at gatherings.
During the Goryeo Dynasty, it is said that each town and temple offered
Yumilgwa to the king. During the Joseon Dynasty, Korean sweets became
a representative food served on tables for rituals including those served to
the king.
As such, they became a preferred food by not only the royal family but also
aristocrats.
